Salvo Gangi

Clarinetist, composer, conductor

He studied at “Vincenzo Bellini" Conservatory of Music – Catania, Italy. He specialized at the International School for Advanced Musical Studies (Bobbio -PC) with Hans Deinzer ( Nuremberg Philharmonic Orchestra), Fabrizio Meloni (Teatro alla Scala Philharmonic Orchestra)  and Antony Pay (Royal Philharmonic Orchestra).

He graduated in Theology at “Studio Teologico San Paolo” - Catania, discussing a thesis on sacred music. He studied composition and choir direction at “Vincenzo Bellini" Conservatory of Music – Catania and University of Messina (SSIS) with: A.Barbarossa, M.Leonardi, Elisa Poidomani, Carmelo Crinò, Bruno Tirotta. Polyphonic repertoire with the teachers: Bruno Zagni, Walter Marzilli, Sebastian Korn, electronic music with Piero Cusato and Stanislao Giacomantonio.

Awards and Recognitions

  • Audience Prize at INTERNATIONAL COMPOSITION COMPOSITION FOR A SACRED MUSIC WORK, «FRANCESCO SICILIANI» AWARD which enjoys the patronage of the Dicastery for Culture and Education of the Vatican and included in the program of the 78th edition of the Sagra Musicale Umbra - Perugia Musica Classica. (performance by S:t Jacobs Chamber Choir conducted by Gary Graden) - (2023)

  • Honorable Mention for my piece "Già della notte" for mixed choir a cappella at the Turoldo International Composition Competition (Udine) on texts by Fr. David Maria Turoldo. The piece will be released by Aldebaran Editions - Rovato (BS) (2023):

  • Honorable Mention for the piece "CANTO XXXIII" International competition choral music composition based on Dante's texts "Puccininsieme al Sommo Poeta", in collaboration with the Ministry of Cultural Heritage, Regione Toscana and the Municipality of Grosseto (2021);

  • Second prize Japan International Choral Composition Competition 2020 and the piece published at the ICOT -Tokyo; - (2020)

  • Finalist in the 59th international "Seghizzi" competition in Gorizia- Italy (2019-2021);

  • Finalist in the competition "Music of passion" city of Mottola (2019);

  • Finalist in the “Vinicio Carrara” competition -ed.Carrara - Bergamo (2018).

Conducting and Musical Activities

Since 1999, he has served as conductor of the mixed choir San Domenico Savio and the Cappella Musicale Calatina of the Diocese of Caltagirone (CT). Since 2016, he has been a member of the Sicilian Clarinet Orchestra, holding the position of President. He is also a member of ANDCI (National Association of Italian Choral Directors).

He has released numerous recordings and publications with ICOT-Tokyo, ASTRUM Editions, Sonitus, Aldebaran Editions, Suvini Zerboni, Musicarte, and MEA (Ethno-Anthropological Museum De Mauro). Currently, he teaches clarinet in state schools and lectures on Music History and Harmony at the S.M.U.L. Musical Association, in collaboration with the Arcangelo Corelli Conservatory of Music in Messina.

Insolia, Ensemble Calamus, Malcom Arnold Society - England, “Teatro Massimo Bellini”– Catania, Taormina Symphony Orchestra, “Notomusicafestival Symphony Orchestra”; V. Emanuele Theater Foundation – Noto (SR), Dante Alighieri Society, University of Catania S. Crocella Center, "Opera Festival" Lyrical-Symphonic Orchestra of Fiesole (FI), Musica antiqua associoation (SR); Also with Alessandro Mannarino in the album "Al Monte", with P. Buonvino he played "Epiklesis" (1996), and soundtracks: Piovra 8-9 (Rai television), L’amante perduto (Mikado Film-Rai), Come te nessuno mai, L’ultimo bacio, Ricordati di me, Padre Pio (Mediaset), Je reste (D.Kurys).
